Frequently asked questions

Is spandex the same as Lycra?

Lycra is a specific brand name owned by The LYCRA Company for a type of spandex (also called elastane), so all Lycra is spandex, but not all spandex is Lycra. The material itself is the same stretchy synthetic fiber; Lycra is simply a trademarked, often higher-quality version of it.

Why does some spandex look shiny while other spandex looks matte?

It comes down to the finish applied to the fiber or knit, not the spandex content itself. A shiny finish reflects more light off the surface, while a matte finish is treated to diffuse it for a flatter, softer look.

What's the difference between a color card and a swatch?

A color card includes small cut samples of every color in one fabric line, so you can compare the full range side by side. A swatch is a larger 3" x 3" square of a specific fabric and color, labeled with the product name, color, and price, so you can feel the texture, stretch, and weight and confirm an exact color match.

Can I return fabric if the color looks different from my screen?

We don't accept returns based on differences in color, since colors can vary from screen to screen. That's why we recommend ordering a color card or swatch first. For an exact color match, a swatch is the best way to be sure before buying yardage.

What's the difference between 2-way and 4-way stretch?

2-way stretch fabric stretches in one direction, usually across the width. 4-way stretch fabric stretches both across the width and along the length, so it moves with the body in every direction. 4-way stretch is ideal for swimwear, activewear, and dancewear, while 2-way stretch works well for garments that need more structure.

What's the difference between nylon spandex and polyester spandex?

Nylon spandex tends to feel smoother and softer, with a sleek hand and excellent stretch. Polyester spandex is often more budget-friendly, holds color well, and resists pilling. Both are versatile, so the best choice depends on the feel, finish, and performance your project needs.

What does fabric weight mean, and why does it matter?

Fabric weight tells you how heavy and dense a fabric is, often listed in GSM (grams per square meter). Lighter fabrics are airy and drapey, great for tops and linings. Heavier fabrics offer more coverage, structure, and support, which suits leggings, swimwear, and outerwear.
