How to Cut LED Fiber-Optic Fabric

A simple guide to cutting and shaping luminous fiber-optic fabric without losing its ability to light up.

LED fiber-optic fabric can be cut into squares, triangles, circles, garment pieces and other custom shapes—but it cannot be treated exactly like regular fabric.

The key is understanding how the optical fibers run through the material and where they connect to the LED light source.

The most important rule:

Any section you want to illuminate must keep its optical fibers connected to the light-source edge.

Once you understand that, planning your cuts becomes much easier.


First, Understand End A and End B

Fiber-optic fabric contains thin plastic optical fibers woven into the textile. These fibers carry light from the LED source through the fabric, creating its glowing effect.

Before cutting, identify End A and End B.

End A: The Shapeable Edge

End A is the direction that can generally be shaped and cut according to your design.

You can use these edges to create straight lines, curves, angles and custom silhouettes.

End B: The Light-Source Edge

End B is where the optical fibers extend from the woven fabric and are gathered toward the LED light source.

If a section needs to light up, the fibers running through that section must remain connected to an End B.

Easy way to remember:

END A = SHAPE + CUT

END B = PRESERVE + CONNECT


How to Cut Fiber-Optic Fabric

Step 1: Lay the Fabric Flat

Lay the LED fiber-optic fabric on a clean, flat surface.

Make sure you can clearly see the full width of the material and the direction in which the optical fibers run.


Step 2: Find End B

Locate the edge or edges where the loose optical fibers extend from the woven fabric.

These are your End B light-source edges.

Do this before placing or marking your pattern.


Step 3: Decide What Needs to Glow

Before cutting, determine which part of your finished design needs to illuminate.

Then follow the optical fibers from that area toward End B.

Ask yourself:

“Will the fibers in the piece I’m keeping still reach End B?”

If yes, you can plan your cut around that connection.


Step 4: Position Your Shape or Pattern

Place your pattern so that the section you want illuminated remains connected to the appropriate End B.

The fabric does not have to stay rectangular.

You can create:

  • Squares and rectangles
  • Triangles
  • Circles and curves
  • Angled shapes
  • Garment pattern pieces
  • Decorative cutouts
  • Custom silhouettes

The shape can change.

The fiber connection is what matters.


Cutting a Square or Rectangle

Squares and rectangles are the simplest shapes to cut from fiber-optic fabric.

Position the piece so one side remains connected to End B, then cut the remaining sides to your desired dimensions.


Cutting a Triangle

Fiber-optic fabric can also be cut into triangular and angled shapes.

Position the triangle so that the optical fibers running through the section you want to keep continue toward End B.

Cut along the angled edges while preserving the required light-source connection.


Cutting a Circle or Curved Shape

Yes, fiber-optic fabric can be cut into circular and curved shapes.

The same rule applies: position the circle so the optical fibers running through the section you want illuminated can still reach End B.

Then carefully cut along your curved outline.


Cutting Garment Pattern Pieces

LED fiber-optic fabric can also be shaped into more complex garment pieces.

Instead of placing your pattern only according to grain or yardage efficiency, you also need to consider the direction of the optical fibers.

Before cutting a garment piece:

  1. Identify End B.
  2. Decide which part of the garment needs to glow.
  3. Follow the fibers from that area toward End B.
  4. Position your pattern while preserving that connection.
  5. Mark your pattern.
  6. Double-check the fiber path.
  7. Cut your desired silhouette.

Curves, angled edges and irregular pattern pieces are possible as long as the illuminated area maintains its required fiber connection.


Can You Make Cutouts in Fiber-Optic Fabric?

Yes. Interior openings and decorative cutouts can also be incorporated into a design.

The important part is that the remaining area you want illuminated still keeps its optical fibers connected to End B.

This makes it possible to create more interesting shapes, negative space and custom design details without limiting the fabric to a solid rectangular panel.


Before You Cut: Quick Check

Before making the first cut, use this checklist:

1. FIND END B

Locate the exposed optical fibers that lead to the LED light source.

2. FOLLOW THE FIBERS

Identify the direction in which the optical fibers travel through the fabric.

3. PLAN THE ILLUMINATED AREA

Decide which part of your finished piece needs to glow.

4. POSITION YOUR PATTERN

Make sure those fibers still have a path toward End B.

5. CHECK AGAIN

Before cutting, confirm that you are not separating the illuminated section from its required fiber connection.

6. CUT YOUR SHAPE

Cut the remaining edges according to your design.

7. PRESERVE END B

Keep the optical fibers required for the LED light-source connection intact.


The Golden Rule for Cutting LED Fiber-Optic Fabric

You do not have to keep luminous fiber-optic fabric rectangular.

You can create curves, angles, garment panels, cutouts and custom shapes.

Just remember:

If it needs to glow, keep its fibers connected to End B.

END A = SHAPE + CUT

END B = PRESERVE + CONNECT

Plan the light path first. Then plan the cut.
