OUR STORY

We started with one shop and one promise

Blue Moon Fabrics opened in 1999 as a single storefront on Maple Avenue, in the middle of the Los Angeles Fashion District. The promise was simple: good fabric at a fair price, and someone behind the counter who could actually answer your question.

That part has not changed. What has changed is how deliberately we narrowed.

Early on we could have carried a bit of everything, the way most fabric stores do. Instead we chose a lane and went deep: fabric that has to perform. Four-way nylon spandex, power mesh and compression knits. Foiled, holographic and sequined surfaces built for stage and camera. Stretch velvet, lace, netting and beaded textiles for costume and couture. Different materials, one thing in common. They all end up in something that has to move, catch light, or survive being worn hard.

It was a deliberate bet, and it was the right one. These are the hardest fabrics to buy well. Two can look identical on a screen and behave nothing alike in a garment. One recovers, the other bags out at the knee after an hour. One is opaque wet, the other is not. One takes a coverstitch cleanly, the other ripples. A sequin that photographs beautifully can shred a seam. You cannot see any of that in a photograph, which is why knowing the difference is the job.

"We wanted to provide more than just fabric."

David Rabani, founder

Today the shop is roughly three times the size it started at, and we cut and ship more than 350,000 yards a year. It still runs on the same counter, the same phone number, and the same idea it opened with.

THE FOUNDER

David Rabani

David has spent more than 25 years in the textile trade and built Blue Moon Fabrics from a single storefront into a supplier that ships worldwide. He is usually somewhere on the floor.

His approach has not really evolved since 1999: know the fabric properly, price it honestly, and treat the person buying three yards the same as the person buying three hundred. Most of what the shop does well comes from that.

WHAT WE CARRY

Built for movement, shine and structure

Four-way nylon and polyester spandex for swimwear and activewear. Power mesh and compression knits where support matters. Foil, hologram, sequin and luminous fabrics for stage and costume. Velvet, lace, netting and stretch sheers for layering and depth.

Every listing carries the composition and the details we can verify. Where we do not know a specification, we say so rather than guess. We would rather tell you we are not sure than have you cut into three yards of the wrong thing.

WHERE OUR FABRIC GOES

From the cutting table to the stage

Some of what leaves this building ends up somewhere you would recognize. We have supplied fabric to Wynn Las Vegas, Cirque du Soleil, Carnival Cruise Line, SeaWorld, Legoland and Universal Orlando Resort.

Fabric bought here has also gone into costume work for Marvel productions, RuPaul's Drag Race, Dancing with the Stars, DRAG: The Musical, The Boys and Next in Fashion, alongside the independent designers, dance companies, drag performers, cosplayers and students who make up most of our day.

How we got here

Three eras, one address

In the beginning

One storefront, everything on the shelf

A single shop on Maple Avenue selling fabric over the counter to whoever walked in. Broad range, small footprint, and a reputation built one customer at a time.

As we narrowed

We picked a lane and went deep

Rather than carry a little of everything, we committed to fabric that has to perform, and started holding real depth in it. Deeper color runs, more yardage on the shelf, and the knowledge that comes from selling the same materials every day for years.

Today

Three times the space, same counter

More than 700 fabrics in over 5,000 colors, cut and shipped at more than 350,000 yards a year, to customers who will never see Los Angeles and to the ones who walk in on a Saturday morning.

Another way in

You do not need the fabric's name to find it

Most people arrive knowing what they want to make, not what the material is called. So the catalog is also organized by how a fabric behaves, which is usually the thing that actually decides the project.

Stretch & recover

High-stretch fabrics that spring back, for pieces that have to move and hold their shape over a long wear.

Support & sculpt

Power mesh and compression knits where the fabric needs to do structural work rather than just cover.

Shine & reflect

Foil, hologram, sequin and luminous fabrics that change under stage light, flash and camera.

Sheer & layered

Mesh, netting and lace for transparency, illusion panels and visual depth.

Texture & dimension

Velvet, flocked, embossed and embellished surfaces with depth you can see and feel.

Lightweight & fluid

Lighter weights with soft drape, for pieces that need to fall rather than hold.

Who we work with

Most of our day is independent makers

The recognizable names further down this page are real, but they are not the bulk of the business. On an ordinary day the counter serves a swimwear brand sampling a new season, a fashion student on a deadline, a dance studio ordering for a recital, a drag performer building a number, and someone making their first pair of leggings.

Swimwear & activewear brands

Four-way stretch with reliable recovery, chlorine and UV considerations, opacity under tension, and the linings and power mesh to go with it.

Dance & performance

Fabrics that survive a season of rehearsal, hold color under stage lighting and move the way choreography needs them to.

Costume, cosplay & drag

The unusual surfaces. Foils, holograms, sequins, stretch metallics and illusion mesh, in the deep color range a specific character or look needs.

Wholesale details

How buying works

What to expect when you order

Fabric is sold by the yard and cut to your order, which is why a few things work differently here than on a shelf-stock store.

Sample before you scale

Screens are unreliable on color, sheen and depth. Swatches and color cards let you judge the real thing in daylight before committing to yardage.

Order Swatches & Color Cards

Cut to order, so it is final

Once fabric is cut for you it cannot go back on the roll, so cut yardage is final sale. That is the honest reason we push swatches so hard rather than a policy we are hiding.

Full returns policy

Volume pricing, applied automatically

Buy more of a fabric and the price per yard drops at the cart on its own. There is no code to enter, no account to apply for and no minimum to qualify.

How the tiers work

Shipping

We ship across the United States and internationally. Orders placed by 10:00 AM PST ship the same business day. Orders placed after 10:00 AM PST are generally processed and shipped on the next business day. No Saturday deliveries.

Ask before you buy

If you are unsure whether a fabric will do what you need, call or email and describe the garment. We would rather spend five minutes on the phone than process a problem later.

(213) 892-0401

Or just come in

The shop is open to the public six days a week. Handle it, stretch it, hold two colors side by side, have it cut while you wait.

Hours and address

Buying for a brand or a production run?

Volume pricing is automatic and open to everyone, so you do not need an account or an approval to get it. For larger programs we can talk through consistent dye lots where available, holding yardage, reorder timing and shipping for bulk quantities.
