What is the Blue Moon Pattern Maker?

An online sewing pattern maker by Blue Moon Fabrics — your first ten patterns are free. It drafts custom patterns from your body measurements for 24 garment types in 70 design styles, renders a fashion designer sketch in your chosen fabric, grades a full size run, and exports print-ready PDF or industry DXF files, all in your browser.

Is the Blue Moon Pattern Maker free?

Your first 10 pattern generations are free, with sketches, yield planning and print-at-home export included. After that, the Studio plan ($19.99) adds DXF/SVG export for cutters, and Pro ($24.99) adds full size grading and AI model photos.

What garments can I make sewing patterns for?

Swimwear including bikinis, one-pieces, swim dresses, rash guards and board shorts; activewear including leggings, sports bras, biker shorts and tennis dresses; dancewear including leotards, unitards and costumes; dresses including bodycon, maxi, wrap and slip; plus crop tops, skirts, shorts, corset tops, lingerie and jumpsuits. 24 garments, 70 styles.

What is a DXF pattern file and which cutters accept it?

DXF is the industry-standard vector format for pattern cutting. The Pattern Maker exports AutoCAD R14 DXF with one labeled layer per pattern piece and per size, compatible with Gerber AccuMark, Lectra, Optitex, CLO 3D, Browzwear, Adobe Illustrator, and most laser or blade cutting tables.

How does size grading work in the Pattern Maker?

The pattern is re-drafted, not scaled, across ten sizes using standard apparel grade rules: 2 inches between circumference sizes (3 inches above size 16) and 3/8 inch length steps, rounded to 1/8 inch. Custom sizes with any label and grade step can be added for your factory.

How do I know how much fabric to buy for my pattern?

The Yield panel calculates units per yard from your nested layout at your chosen fabric width using a 78% production marker efficiency, so you can cost a full production run. The Stats page shows exact yards to buy for a single garment.

How do I print a sewing pattern at home at the correct size?

Use Export then Print and set the printer to 100% scale or actual size, never fit-to-page. Every piece includes grain lines, notches and seam allowance. For large pieces, a print shop wide-format printer works with the same 100% rule.

Can I give the designer sketch to a sewing contractor?

Yes, it is designed for that. Every sketch is a fashion plate with a spec column listing garment, style, fabric, selected construction features and date, drawn in your exact fabric. Download it as a high-resolution PNG and send it with your graded DXF files.

Are my measurements and designs private?

Yes. Patterns are drafted in your browser and projects are saved on your own device. Uploaded reference images are analysed in-session and never stored on Blue Moon servers.

Why is a fabric store making a pattern maker?

Because patterns and fabric belong together. Blue Moon Fabrics has supplied Los Angeles designers for years. The Pattern Maker lets you design with real Blue Moon fabrics, see your sketch in the material you will sew, and know your yardage before ordering.
